This distinction has arisen because yoga as it is often now taught in the West focuses on a more athletic expression where students move quickly and have a focus on athletic strength, stamina and the ability to do difficult postures.
The practice of yoga has classically be one that facilitates a deeper connection to oneself, to life and to a higher level of consciousness. Yoga therapy focuses on supporting physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and well-being. It’s practices are not based on how someone looks, or how much one can do; they are based on what brings ease, steadiness, health and healing to an individual.
Please wear comfortable clothing and possibly bring a layer, depending on the weather and the nature of what we may do. Socks are always good to wear at the end of a yoga/stretching practice.
Limit your food intake for 2 – 3 hours beforehand so that you don’t feel uncomfortable while doing a session. Eating an apple or something light an hour ahead of time is suggested in order to take the edge off, if class is at dinner or lunch time.
If you are having a one-on-one private session, props will be provided. If you are attending a class, please bring your own yoga mat if possible. Other props will be provided.
Out of consideration for others in a class setting, please be mindful of scents and body odor.
E-transfer, cash or cheque please. Credit cards not accepted.
Prior to attending any session, whether a class or individual private, it is highly recommended that you speak with Christina Niven to discuss your personal history, challenges, goals and concerns. Consultations are free.
Understanding exactly what may be going on for you will enable instruction to be tailored to your specific needs and ability. If you require expertise beyond Christina’s scope and ability, she will let you know and suggest possible alternate strategies and/or practitioners.
I teach clients in their homes or at work. Under certain conditions, I may teach out of my home in Vancouver.

An initial free consultation is required prior to booking as it is of utmost importance that an individual’s history, needs, goals/intentions and concerns are understood and taken into consideration prior to doing any sessions.
Over a year ago, I was looking for a yoga instructor for my studio, CORE, and was given Christina’s name from a mutual client. Christina started teaching at my studio once or twice a week and was an instant success. Her experienced and caring style of instruction is a value to me as a business owner and as one of her students. I never want to miss a single yoga class Christina teaches at my studio – it’s become a highlight of my week!
The highlight of my typically busy week is without question attending Christina’s yoga class. There is a nice blend between the combinations of yoga moves along with a continuity of attention to detail and feedback. By the time the class is finished I feel both mentally and physically refreshed – and can’t wait for the next class!
Christina is passionate about yoga and her practice and it radiates in her teachings. She is extremely knowledgeable and provides insightful instruction not only on a physical level that allows you to explore your individual potential but also takes you on a spiritual journey if you wish to go! With her gentle nature and wit you always leave her class feeling relaxed, centered a little bit taller and a whole lot lighter!
I started working with Christina as a novice “yogi” and although I had tried yoga in the past it never really stuck….until I met Christina. Here was someone who didn’t expect me to be all bendy. You can tell that she loves what she does and that she enjoys sharing her passion for yoga with you whatever stage you’re at, mentally or physically. Compared to other instructors I’ve gone to, Christina is very aware and will make sure that you understand the poses and makes sure you’re doing them properly. I’ve had so many instructors where they didn’t cue or give proper instruction but Christina makes sure you’re getting the full benefit of yoga and part of that is implementing movements correctly. I have learned so much from her and always always love doing yoga with her whether its one on one or in a group. She’s a beautiful gentle soul who is a fantastic yoga instructor that I will continue to recommend to as many people as possible.
Both my husband and I have been receiving individual instruction and attending group classes with Christina Niven. Each of us has received far more benefit than we had ever imagined possible. In addition to the breadth and depth of her knowledge, Christina brings a genuine care and concern and begins each session by addressing specific concerns or problems. My husband had great difficulty walking when he began a yoga practice with Christina. Today, he is able to work a full shift, half of which is spent walking – some 5,000 steps over four hours. He willingly and regularly devotes time to the routines Christina has developed for him. After working with her, my body is able to sustain proper alignment to a greater and longer extent than it has for years. My balance, strength and posture are all improved. We recommend Christina to people of all ages, and particularly to those whose physical condition needs remedial and restorative assistance.
As I’ve gotten older I’ve become stiffer. I have aches and pains and things creak sometimes. Your class helps so much with my flexibility and movement. And I feel less pain and stiffness because of the yoga you teach. Your style of teaching is gentle and very educational. Your classes are perfect for us guys and you pace the program so we can all keep up and go at our own level of comfort. I highly recommend your classes. Thanks for helping me live a better, less stiff life!
